The History of Handcuffs

Tracing the origin of handcuff-like restraints is challenging, as these tools have been essential since the dawn of human civilization for restraining individuals. Before the advent of metal, people used rope, animal hides, or any other sturdy material available to achieve the same effect.

The first documented reference to handcuffs appears in Virgil’s retelling of the myth of Proteus, an ancient Greek deity capable of shape-shifting. According to the myth, Proteus had the ability of prophecy, which many sought to exploit. However, whenever someone approached Proteus seeking his wisdom, he would change his form and evade capture. Aristaeus, the son of Apollo, desperate to uncover the reason behind the mortality of his bees, discovered and utilized the trick to prevent Proteus from escaping: handcuffs.
