Why Choose Freeze-Dried Emergency Food?
There is a direct correlation between moisture content and shelf life. The higher the moisture content, the shorter the shelf life. Dehydrated food loses a significant amount of moisture—up to 90 percent! Home dehydrators might only remove 80% of the water, which results in a shorter shelf life. However, high-quality dehydrated food can still maintain a shelf life of up to 15 years, and sometimes up to 25 years, depending on the food.
Freeze-dried food is optimal for long-term storage due to its shelf life of 25 years or more. To maximize shelf-life, store freeze-dried food in a cool, dark, and dry location.
Preparing Freeze-Dried Emergency Food
To prepare freeze-dried food, simply add water and consume once rehydrated. The taste is remarkably similar to the original. Dehydrated food, on the other hand, typically requires boiling water to rehydrate it, which can take up to 20 minutes depending on the food.
Nutrition
Freeze-dried food retains most of its nutrients throughout the process. Once rehydrated, it is comparable in nutritional value to its fresh counterpart. In contrast, dehydrated food only retains 60-75% of its original nutrients, whereas freeze-dried food retains about 97% of its original nutrients.
Taste
Flavor is essential. If food doesn’t taste good, why would we eat it? Both freeze-dried and dehydrated foods taste great, but freeze-drying preserves more nutrients and thus better flavor. Freeze-drying also retains the original texture and natural aroma. Dehydration uses heat, which can cause a loss of flavor, nutrients, and texture. Most people agree that freeze-dried food wins the taste test.
